This spring, GCISD’s Career and Technical Education launched an inaugural commercial roofing program in partnership with TriVAN Roofing and Duro-Last Commercial Roofing Solutions.
“This program came together through connections with industry partners who saw an opportunity to invest in students while helping address workforce needs in the skilled trades,” said Stephanie Speaks. “Our goal in CTE is to provide students with authentic, hands-on experiences that lead to industry certifications, career opportunities and valuable real-world skills they can carry with them into the future and this partnership could potentially open doors for our students.”

Dave Custable, vice president of TriVAN Roofing, said there is a shortage of highly skilled trades workers, not only in commercial roofing, but also in HVAC and electrical fields. “Along with Duro-Last, we said, ‘Why don’t we work with our local schools to provide training and certification opportunities that could help students gain entry into the industry and help fill the pipeline?’”
Through the 18-week program, students learned about commercial roofing practices, proper installation of materials and job safety directly while working with industry professionals.

CTE teacher Tyler Durr said that the program provides students opportunities for today and into the future.
“They are learning welding in this class, but now they’re also gaining skills in another trade that can make them more employable,” Durr said. “Even if they choose another career path, understanding the industry gives them valuable knowledge they can use later in life when working with contractors on their own homes.”
Grapevine High School junior Carson Sibley said the class has helped him expand his skill set, “which could help me in the future.”
The class is part of CTE’s Business and Industry Program of Study, through which students can earn an industry certification.
