Sara and Noah posing with state championship trophy

On May 7-8, members of the Colleyville Heritage High School and Grapevine High School tennis teams competed at the UIL 5A State Championship, where GHS senior Noah Malin and junior Sara Gyorgy won the mixed doubles state title.

The pair defeated Midlothian High School in the finals after being down 1-4 in the first set, and mounting a comeback to win 6-4 and 6-3. Along the way, they also defeated teams from Frisco Independence High School and Frisco Lebanon Trail High School.

This is the third consecutive doubles state title Gyorgy has won and her first mixed doubles championship. Gyorgy previously won two girls doubles championships with her sister, Emilia, who now plays collegiate tennis for Midwestern State University.

“So proud of them,” said GHS Head Tennis Coach Kyle Apperson. “People didn't realize the pressure they were under since Sara was going for three. I'm happy with how they handled the adversity in the final, being down 1-4. In the end, it made it that much sweeter. They now have a memory that will last forever.”

Last season, Malin qualified for the state tournament for the first time in boys doubles, but lost to state runners-up from Frisco Memorial High School in the quarterfinals with teammate Conner Isbell. This is Malin’s first state title and an excellent way to cap off his senior year.

Congratulations, Noah and Sara!
