Teacher Honored with Congressional Veteran Commendation

Congratulations to Grapevine High School speech/communications teacher and First Sergeant Robert Hazlewood who has been honored with the 2025 Congressional Veteran Commendation by Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne.

The award was created to honor distinguished veterans of the 24th Congressional District of Texas and to preserve their stories for future generations.

Hazelwood served with distinction in the Unites State Marine Corps for 30 years, including during the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. Throughout his career, he held leadership roles and received military decorations, which include the National Defense Service Medal with bronze star, three Good Conduct Medals, three Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medals, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the Overseas Service Ribbon.

After his retirement from the military, he continued to serve his community, opening a martial arts school to teach self defense and volunteering in his church. A Rotarian, he also continued to mentor youth through Rotary Interact and Junior Achievement, and was honored by the Governor of Tennessee for his work.

His endeavors to benefit youth is what prompted him to become a teacher.

“I was always teaching and encouraged to join the profession by students, parents and teachers themselves,” he added. “I really enjoy working with young people because of their enthusiasm and desire to learn. My goal is to teach them how to have a great voice in this world.”
