On May 15-16, GCISD athletics saw continued success, with three teams advancing in their respective rounds of the playoffs.

The Grapevine High School softball team competed in the UIL 5A Division II Region I championship in a best-of-three series against Lubbock-Cooper High School and won two games to one to claim the regional title for the first time in program history.

“The girls have worked very hard to get this far and it is through their hard work, sacrifices and passion that they have earned the right to be here,” said GHS head softball coach Christina Gwyn.

This is Coach Gwyn’s first season as the head coach at GHS, and the team has had great success so far this postseason, only losing one game throughout four rounds of the playoffs, and three straight series sweeps before the regional championship round.

“One of the first things we did this season was create a mission statement, outlining not only what we wanted to accomplish this year but also to lay the foundation for what this program means to us,” said Gwyn. “This empowered them to have a voice and invest in who we are, which has been the driving force behind us getting to this point in the postseason.”

The Mustangs will advance to the state championship semifinals and take on Hallsville High School in a best-of-three series, which will begin on Wednesday, May 21, at Athens High School.

The Colleyville Heritage High School and GHS baseball teams competed in their respective divisions of the UIL 5A regional semifinals and both teams won their series to advance to the regional championship round.

The Panthers defeated El Paso Americas High School and will now be playing Aledo High School. This is the first time the Panthers will be playing in the regional championship since they won the state title in 2019.

“I am definitely proud of what the players have accomplished this season. It is something we set our sights on when school started this past fall and knew our players had the talent to do it. We had 10 players return from the 2024 team that advanced to the 2nd round of the playoffs. Having that many players return with playoff experience is very valuable,” Said CHHS head baseball coach Cris McMullen. “I think for the players getting to experience the 2024 success just motivated them to continue to work hard and every time they take the field, they expect to win, which is great to see as a coach.

The Panthers will begin their best-of-three series on Thursday, May 22, at Birdville High School.

The Mustangs swept and had two straight shutout games against Abilene Wylie High School. This will be the third year in a row that GHS has made it to the fourth round of the playoffs.

“We have high expectations in this program, and the kids have embraced that mindset.  High expectations are the norm in this school and in this program,” said GHS head baseball coach Jimmy Webster. “I am proud of the kids we have and how they have handled this season. I believe they are expecting to continue to do big things in the upcoming days and weeks.”

The Mustangs will take on Lubbock-Cooper High School Friday, May 22, at Brownwood High School.

Congratulations to every team advancing in their postseason journey!
