On May 29 and 30, the Grapevine High School baseball team swept Lucas Lovejoy High School two games to zero in a best-of-three series to advance to the UIL 5A Division 2 state championship game for the second straight state final appearance.

“So happy and so proud of this group. What they are doing right now is unbelievable. We knew there would be huge moments and we didn't shy away from any of them,” said GHS head baseball coach Jimmy Webster.

In game one, freshman pitcher Luke Esquivel took the mound and had an impressive outing, striking out batters for a 2-0 win.

In game two, the Mustangs headed to extra innings after being tied 5-5. Junior Zack Goldstein hit a double to bring in Esquivel to take the lead 6-5. In the bottom of the inning, senior Sam Durad secured the win with two straight strikeouts.

“They expect things like that from themselves and from each other. We know we don't have to be perfect, but we love competition. Our kids enjoy being under the big lights and they handle it well,” added Webster.

The Mustangs will now head to Dell Diamond in Round Rock to take on Humble Kingwood Park High School in hopes of bringing home their third state championship in school history.
