On May 23 and 24, Grapevine High School baseball swept Lubbock Cooper High School two games to zero in a best-of-three series to claim the UIL 5A-II Region I championship for the second year in a row.
Freshman pitcher Luke Esquivel pitched a shutout, only allowing two hits, to win game one 4-0. In game two, the Mustangs fought through adversity. In the bottom of the fifth inning, trailing 7-3, junior catcher Gianni Corral hit a three-run home run to bring the Mustangs within one. In the next inning, the bats opened up and produced a seven run inning. GHS went on to win game two, 13-8.
The Mustangs will now head to the state semifinal against Lucas Lovejoy High School, which will be a rematch of last year's state championship game.
Go Mustangs!
