GCISD Juniors

Things to Think About

  • Opportunities for leadership roles in the school/community

  • Create a personal email account for college correspondence (one that is professional and school appropriate)

  • Potential majors and careers - if you don't know, consider taking the ASVAB, it is not just for the military

  • What are some things that you are doing that could go on a resume?  If you don't already have one...start one!

Things to Do

Continue College Planning

  • Entrance Exams

    • Many schools have gone "test optional" but it is still a good idea to test, you do not have to send scores if you don't want to.

    • This is the year to really focus on entrance exams if your schools require them so that you have time to retake if you do not get your desired scores.

    • Check ACT/SAT website for dates and deadlines

  • Continue researching colleges and careers. Narrow your options down to your top schools. - You have 2 excused college visit days during your Junior year and 2 during your Senior year.

  • Continue to explore the benefits of advanced classes, dual credit, and CTE Certifications

  • Attend GCISD College Fair and connect with recruiters to learn about specific colleges

  • Visit with schools that come for lunch visits on your campus

  • Make an Appointment with the Go Center if you do not know where to start

  • Meet with your counselor to go over your graduation plan

  • You can begin writing your admissions essays for schools in your junior year, ApplyTexas and CommonApp publish these a year in advance.

  • Continue writing down all of your extracurricular/volunteer/community activities and how much time you spend on each, we have a sample document to help you organize them.

Community Service Scholarships
Your volunteer and community efforts show who you are and what you value.

  • Document extracurricular or summer activities.

  • Keep your records in one place. (If you are required to submit these to a sponsor, make a copy for yourself)

  • Stay involved in one or two community service organizations. Colleges want to see a commitment to one or two organizations.

If you ever have questions, you can always stop by the Go Center!
