En el semestre de otoño de 2022, el Comité de Lenguaje Dual comenzó a reunirse para evaluar nuestro programa de Lenguaje Dual actual. Este comité se formó para examinar nuestro modelo de programa porque nuestros datos de los logros académicos de nuestros estudiantes bilingües emergentes no estaban alcanzando el nivel de el potencial de cada estudiante y logrando las expectativas de los requisitos del estado. El comité se reunió dos veces al mes hasta principios de febrero. Estuvo compuesto por directores, subdirectores, personal de apoyo a los maestros y maestros de las Escuelas Primarias Timberline y Silver Lake, las Escuelas Intermedias Cross Timbers y Grapevine, y la Escuela Preparatoria de Grapevine. El comité examinó el rendimiento de los estudiantes en los modelos de lenguaje dual de un sendero (DL1) y lenguaje dual de dos senderos (DL2). Además, el comité consideró que el propósito de un programa bilingüe es que los estudiantes bilingües emergentes alcancen un dominio total de su idioma principal (español), así como del inglés, para que puedan participar equitativamente en la escuela.

¿Qué continuará igual?
Los estudiantes de 1.° a 4.° grado que actualmente están inscritos en el programa bilingüe de lenguaje dual de dos senderos (DL2) continuarán en el modelo del programa bilingüe de lenguaje dual de dos senderos (DL2) hasta que el último grupo de estudiantes a los que se les enseña con el modelo DL2 se haya matriculado en la escuela intermedia al final del año escolar 2026-2027.

¿Qué cambiará?
Nuestro distrito continuará con la implementación del programa bilingüe lenguaje dual de un sendero (DL1) en Pre kínder y kínder. En el año escolar 2023-2024, GCISD sólo inscribirá a estudiantes emergentes bilingües en el programa de lenguaje dual (DL1). Ofreceremos dos modelos de programación bilingüe (DL1 y DL2) para los grupos actuales de estudiantes en los grados primero a cuarto.

Programa de Lenguaje Dual De Un Sendero
En un modelo de programa bilingüe de lenguaje dual de un sendero 90/10, los estudiantes reciben instrucción el 90% del tiempo en el idioma asociado y el 10% en inglés durante el primer año, y la cantidad de instrucción en inglés aumenta gradualmente cada año hasta que el inglés y el idioma asociado se utilizan cada uno para el 50% de la instrucción (generalmente en tercer grado).

Tercer Grado = 50% Español / 50% English

Quinto Grado = 50% Español / 50% English

In the fall semester of 2022, The Dual Language Advisory Committee began meeting to evaluate our current Dual Language program. This committee was formed to examine our program model because our trend data demonstrated our Emergent Bilingual students were not achieving to the level at which they have the potential to achieve. The committee met twice a month through early February. It was comprised of principals, assistant principals, learning liaisons, and classroom teachers from the Timberline and Silver Lake Elementary Schools, Cross Timbers and Grapevine Middle Schools, and Grapevine High School. The committee examined student achievement in both the one-way and two-way models. Additionally, the committee considered that the purpose of a dual language program is so that Emergent Bilingual learners attain full proficiency in their primary language, as well as in English, so they are able to participate equitably in school.

What will remain the same?
The students in 1st-4th grades who are currently enrolled in Two-Way Dual Language (DL2) will continue in the Two-Way Dual Language (DL2) Program model until the final group of students taught with the DL2 model has matriculated to middle school at the end of the 2026-2027 school year.

What will change?
Our district will continue the implementation of the Bilingual One-Way Dual Language Program (DL1) in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. In the 2023-2024 school year, GCISD will only enroll Emergent Bilingual/English Learners into the Bilingual Dual Language program. We will offer two models of bilingual programming (DL1 and DL2) for the current groups of students in grades first-fourth.

One-Way Dual Language Model
In a 90/10 Bilingual One-Way Dual Language program model, students are instructed 90% of the time in the partner language and 10% in English in the first year, with the amount of English instruction gradually increasing each year until English and the partner language are each used for 50% of instruction (generally by third grade). In GCISD our Dual Language Framework will be as follows:
PreKindergarten = 90% Spanish / 10% English
Kindergarten = 80% Spanish / 20% English
First Grade = 70% Spanish / 30% English
Second Grade = 60% Spanish / 40% English
Third = 50% Spanish / 50% English
Fourth Grade = 50% Spanish / 50% English
Fifth = 50% Spanish / 50% English

The Dual Language Department will be working with teachers and staff as we transition into this instructional framework.
