AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.

What is AVID?

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a structured college and career readiness course designed to support students' development of inquiry, critical reading, and analytical writing skills. Each week, students in the AVID elective class engage in reading and writing curriculum, tutor-facilitated study groups, collaborative activities and academic success skills. The tools used in this course will help students to be more successful readers, writers, and thinkers in the more rigorous courses in which they will also be expected to enroll (i.e. Advanced and accelerated middle school offerings, Advanced, CTE, AP or Dual high school offerings). The AVID elective class reviews and then builds upon skills learned in prior years of AVID. Potential students will need to apply and interview before being accepted into the elective.

AVID Tutorials

Inquiry-based and collaborative, AVID tutorials are a structured routine that takes students through a variety of metacognitive tasks starting with identifying a specific point of confusion all the way through applying its resolution in an academic class. Tutorials are a collaborative environment in which students use the inquiry process and Socratic dialogue to address Points of Confusion from their content classes in order to come to a more complete understanding of what they are learning. Tutorials are student-led but facilitated by a designated tutor. If you are interested in applying for an AVID tutor position in GCISD, please click here.
