A pair of GCISD student-athletes competed at the UIL Track & Field State Meet on Friday, and each came home with a state championship for their efforts at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. Walker St. John, a senior at Grapevine High, won the 3,200-meter 5A race. Lucas Williams, a senior at Colleyville Heritage High, won the 5A discus throw.
St. John’s victory earned him a sixth gold medal in his high school career, and his third this year after winning individual and team state championships at the Cross Country State Meet in the fall. On Friday in the 3,200-meter, St. John had an incredible finishing kick and took the lead of the race in the final 150 meters. He ran the 800-meter race on Friday and capped his day with a fourth-place finish.
Williams also made a late push on his way to his first state championship. After the fifth of sixth attempts at the discus throw, he sat in second place with a throw 178’3”. On his sixth and final attempt, Williams had a huge improvement with a 191’2”, enough to win him the state championship by almost four inches. Williams also competed in the shot put on Friday and finished in ninth place.
Congratulations to Lucas and Walker who represented their schools and GCISD well on the biggest track and field stage in the Texas!
