GCISD Hosts Experts for Hour of Code

GCISD is proud to once again participate in the Hour of Code, a nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org to introduce students to one hour of computer science. It was launched in December of 2013 to demystify and promote Computer Science.

GCISD has participated every year since its inception, and this year students were able to hear from a group of coding experts from various fields. Keep reading for a list of experts that participated and to see the presentations they made.

James Burkhardt - App Developer, Odeko App

Ever wonder how an idea becomes an app? Join this developer to follow the journey of an app from dream to reality. Mr. Burkhardt will highlight the functions of his app that allow users to locate and order local coffee! He will then give a behind the scenes sneak peek of what it takes to code an app. Included in this talk will be a focus on heart, perseverance and work ethic.

Manny Alvear - Technical Write, Arduino Projects/Maker Expert

Join this charismatic expert to learn how he uses his technical knowledge to work with electronic manufacturers and coding experts to write manuals and documents for users. Mr. Alvear will showcase some of his amazing passion projects that he builds and programs using arduinos in his garage!

Dan Pritchett - Software Architect/Principal Engineer, Google Maps

Google has so many apps and layers in their Google Suite! This session will focus specifically on Google Maps and what it takes to create the end user experience. Join this expert to take a behind the scenes look at how software architects use data and images to build digital maps.
