The Career and Technical Association of Texas (CTAT) has named GCISD’s Charity McConnell as their New Teacher of the Year. McConnell is the criminal justice/law enforcement instructor in GCISD’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program.

Presented to a teacher with three to five years in the profession, the award recognizes new CTE teachers who have made significant contributions toward innovative and unique career and technical education programs and shown a professional commitment early in their careers.

McConnell joined the teaching profession in 2020 as a teacher with GCISD. Prior to becoming a teacher she worked as a fire inspector and crime scene investigator for more than 15 years in the Las Vegas, Nev., area.

“It has been my mission to reach at least ‘just one’ young person and make a difference in their life,” McConnell said. Now that she is in the classroom, she said that this “mission has transitioned to every one of my students being the ‘just one’ and I feel honored to be recognized for the hard work and dedication I have put forth to career and technical education for the students of GCISD and the community.”

During her time in GCISD’s Law and Public Services program, she has developed a highly sought-after program, which offers criminal investigation and law enforcement courses as well as a practicum in law, public safety corrections and security. Students can also earn certifications in various areas and McConnell has established partnerships with local colleges as well as fire and police departments. Additionally, a 911 operator training center was added on campus this school year.

As the Texas honoree, McConnell now advances to compete for the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) Region IV award. Region IV includes the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Regional winners will advance to compete for the national awards in their respective categories.
