Music Therapy

For some students, Music Therapy can be effective in providing a structured environment that helps teach cognitive, communication, motor and social skills through the use of music strategies and experiences.  Music therapy can also provide an opportunity to experience the success of adapted music performances.

As with all related services, ARD Committees are responsible for determining when an evaluation for this service would be appropriate. The most important element of the assessment is the comparison of a student’s skills (as targeted by his or her Individual Education Plan) with and without the structure of music therapy strategies.  Qualification for services will be based on whether the structure and strategies of music therapy significantly assist that student in performing IEP related tasks and impacts his/her ability to progress on IEP goals and objectives.

Professional requirements of a Music Therapist - A Music Therapist must have a bachelor's degree in music therapy from a university approved by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) and have completed 1200 hours of clinical training at an approved internship site.  A national board certification exam is required to obtain the credential MT-BC (Music Therapist-Board Certified) granted by the Certification Board for Music Therapists. This credential must be obtained in order to provide music therapy services to a targeted population.  Music Therapists must adhere to the AMTA Standards of Clinical Practice and the Music Therapists' Code of Ethics.
