When the Grapevine High School girls golf team opened its season at The Heart of Texas Invitational on September 14, the Lady Mustangs had quite the surprise. The two-time defending 5A State Champions were greeted at Squaw Valley Golf Course by a cheering section of GHS football student-athletes.

Fresh off of a 56-21 victory over Northwest High School on Thursday night, a group of Mustangs made the 70-plus mile trip to Glen Rose, Texas, on Friday morning to support their fellow classmates as they took on some of the best female golfers from around the state.

During the summer, GHS golf head coach Bryan Humphreys and football head coach Mike Alexander came up with the idea to go above-and-beyond in their support for each other’s programs. The GHS golfers routinely attend football games on Friday nights, even when they have 5 a.m. wake up calls the next morning for weekend tournaments, so the GHS football team didn’t hesitate at the chance to return the favor.

The Lady Mustangs would go on to a second-place finish, just two shots off the lead, including a school-record round of 298 on Friday.
