The following was sent to the GCISD community on May 6, 2021.
GCISD families,
This afternoon, during a GCISD Board of Trustees Special Meeting, the Board voted to update GCISD COVID-19 protocols. We will use this as an opportunity to test and monitor the outcomes prior to the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year. The approved updates to the COVID-19 protocols include:
Current GCISD COVID-19 response protocols will expire at the end of the 2020-2021 school year.
Beginning June 1, 2021, masks will be optional at all GCISD campuses and facilities.
During the summer, contact tracing will continue; however, close contact quarantines will be optional.
These recommendations were made after careful and continual monitoring of staff and student COVID cases throughout the 2020-2021 school year. Since the week of April 5, 32 GCISD students or staff have tested positive for COVID-19 and of the quarantined close contacts only five became positive after exposure. This is a significant decline from November and December 2020 and January 2021 where we averaged more than 50 student and staff cases per week. The lower rate of infection, coupled with the availability of a vaccine for individuals ages 16 and older has allowed the District and Board to be comfortable in adjusting what were once necessary protocols. We will use summer positivity rates to monitor these updated protocols, which could affect decisions for the fall. The plan is to return to normal pre-COVID protocols in August 2021.
One additional piece of information I wanted to share with you is regarding an upcoming opportunity for those interested in receiving the vaccine. On Thursday, May 13, from 3-6 p.m GCISD will host a vaccination clinic for GCISD staff, parents and eligible students. More details will be forthcoming regarding this districtwide opportunity.
As we continue to move throughout the end of the semester and into the summer, the District will provide regular and timely updates to families regarding instructional options, safety protocols and plans to return to school for the 2021-2022 school year. Updates will be shared regularly on the District website, www.gcisd.net, as well as in the GCISD Update and on social media.

Esta tarde, durante una reunión especial de la Junta Directiva de GCISD, la Junta votó para actualizar los protocolos COVID-19 de GCISD. Otro dato que quería compartir con ustedes se trata de una próxima oportunidad para quienes estén interesados en recibir la vacuna. El jueves 13 de mayo, de 3 a 6 p.m., GCISD albergará una clínica de vacunación para el personal, los padres y los estudiantes elegibles de GCISD. Próximamente se recibirán más detalles sobre esta oportunidad para todo el distrito.
