The GCISD Board of Trustees approved Kirk Martin as the new head football coach and boys’ athletic coordinator at Colleyville Heritage High School during the Board meeting on Monday, February 24.
Coach Martin built the football program at Manvel High School from 2006-2018 to an overall record of 108-25 (.812), played for two State championships, won six district titles and had eight consecutive playoff appearances. While at Manvel High School, Coach Martin was also named the 2011 Houston’s Touchdown Club Coach of the year and the Texan Live Coach of the Year in 2017.
“I am really excited to be a Panther!” Martin said. “I am fired up to work at such a great school and program. I can’t wait to build relationships with the students, faculty and I feel so blessed to be part of the Pride at Colleyville Heritage!”
Martin began his career in 1992 at Cathedral High School as an assistant coach before moving to El Paso Riverside High School as an offensive coordinator in 1994. In 1996, Martin moved to Alvin High School where he served a similar role. In 2000, Coach Martin became an assistant coach at Odessa Permian. He was named an offensive coordinator at Giddings High School in 2003 before becoming a head coach and athletic director for Alpine High School in 2004.
After a successful career at Manvel from 2006-2018, Coach Martin transitioned to the collegiate level as the quarterback coach at Syracuse University. During the 2018 season, Syracuse University scored a program-record 523 points and finished 11th nationally in points per game. The team also beat West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl.
“We are so excited to welcome Coach Martin as the next head coach for our Panther football program,” said Executive Director of Athletics Bryan Gerlich. “He is a proven coach at both the high school and collegiate level, and we look forward to continuing the winning tradition at Colleyville Heritage High School.”
Coach Martin earned a bachelor's degree in kinesiology at the University of Texas El Paso, where he was a four-year letterwinner and a tight end for the football team. He also earned a masters degree in school administration from Sul Ross State.
