Tina Garrett, current Grapevine High School associate principal, has been named the new principal of Cannon Elementary School: A GCISD STEM School. Trustees approved the appointment during the July 22 regularly scheduled Board meeting.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the families and staff at Cannon Elementary School,” Garrett said. “I am committed to providing innovative leadership that supports authentic learning experiences for students and I cannot wait to get started!”
The search for a new principal for Cannon Elementary began when Tona Blizzard announced her retirement in June.
Garrett began her career in GCISD as a fourth-grade teacher at Silver Lake Elementary School. She has also taught math and health while coaching volleyball and softball for schools in New Orleans and Madison, Mississippi.
In 2007, Garrett began her focus on STEM education as a magnet teacher in Garland ISD. She also served as a science instructional coach before moving into an administrative role as the elementary science curriculum coordinator in 2013. In 2014, she was named the PreK-12 science curriculum coordinator and in 2015 she became the STEM curriculum coordinator. Garrett rejoined GCISD in 2017 as an associate principal at GHS, where she was responsible for the high school STEM program.
“Throughout her career, Tina has demonstrated a passion for STEM education, which makes her an ideal leader for our thriving STEM school,” said Dr. Robin Ryan, GCISD Superintendent. “We are excited for Tina to assume this new leadership role and look forward to continued successes at Cannon Elementary!”
Tina earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas and two Master of Education degrees from Southern Methodist University in education and educational leadership. She is currently working on her doctoral degree from Texas Tech University in curriculum and instruction with a specialization in STEM education.
