What are we doing in PAT class?

First - A big Thank You to all of you that were able to attend the PAT Curriculum Night at SLE!  If you missed this meeting and would like a copy of the hand-out - just let me know and I'll send a copy home with your child.

We have been spending time honing our creativity skills.  The students have practiced brainstorming and have recently added draw starts to their creative tool belt.  We are also exploring what makes us alike in this class and what traits make us unique.

If you ever want to see what a student thinks - just ask them to create a monument to honor themselves!  This week we will finish and present our monuments to the class. We've also met a rather challenging fellow named Peter Puzzlemaker. This month we are beginning to stretch our logical thinking skills by looking at Perplexors (elimination logic) as a precursor to the grid logic with a mathematical proof we will be starting in November.

Questions, questions, questions!  Third graders have been exploring the difference between Convergent and Divergent questions and have had a great time writing questions about many things. We've also been having fun with Hands-on brainstorming - what could you do with a cup and a pipe cleaner?  And as a piggy back to that - we've been having fun with Spontaneous Problem Solving and presenting our solutions to the class.

We began the month SCAMPER-ing our way around Hershey's kisses and designing an improved student chair.

Also this October, the students will have a "Passion for Enigmas." Students will begin a research project with a partner in which they choose an enigma they are interested in.  They will brainstorm questions to explore on the topic, then narrow the topic into a manageable task and write a Statement of Purpose to drive their research. As part of the presentation of their information, students will be asked to share their information from multiple points of view.  I'll keep you posted as to deadlines as they come!

Heigh-ho! Heigh-ho! It's off to work we go!  Enterprise City here we come!  Your child has completed a job application and will soon be going through the interview process to be placed in a job for our day at Enterprise City.  We will spend the day at EC on Monday, January 14th.  More information about this field trip will come home in the following months.  Our school is responsible for manning 5 shops - the Radio Station, the TV Studio, the Gift Shop, the Print Shop, and the Photo Shop.  I will need a parent volunteer in each shop for the day - notes will be coming home soon.

We have also been practicing our CoRT thinking skills.  Most recently we used APC (Alternatives, Possibilities, Choices) to help our group create a proposal for a new shop to move into the space vacated by Chix.  I can't wait to hear these presentations next and to see what our City Council votes on to fill this vacancy.
