The Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA)  was established to encourage Texas children to read more books, explore a variety of current books, develop powers of discrimination, and identify their favorite books. Texas Bluebonnet Award winners and nominees (past and present)  may be used for summer reading for entering 6th Grade students.

The Texas Lone Star Reading List is a recommended reading list developed by public and school librarians. The purpose of the list is to encourage students in grades 6, 7, or 8 to explore a variety of current books. Both past and present Texas Lone Star Reading Lists  may be used for summer reading.

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

The Coretta Scott King Book Award is given to an African American author and an African American illustrator for an outstandingly inspirational and educational contribution. The books promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream.
