Better late than never. . .April is coming to a close and everyone has been working so incredibly hard all year to prepare our students to be successful in classes and in life. TAKS then will follow suit as a nice consequence.  It would be naive to say that we don't do all we can to prepare our students for this exam, and yet we have to realize that this snapshot of one day is just that--  a snapshot, a survey sampling the many objectives that we teach in social studies.
Department chairs and campus representatives got together to look at benchmark data to gather information.  Despite a natural initial aversion  to looking at results, many conclusions can be drawn that are truly helpful to inform us about the instruction going on in classes and practices that may or may not be working as they are intended. We looked at things that GCISD consistently does well in social studies, things that we are inconsistent about and things that seem to have a negative trend.  Each campus knows which areas they are targeting  and they will get another chance to do a compass check after the TAKS results come in for 2008.
GCISD is infinitely proud of the job that social studies teachers do each year, and even more proud of the ones that continuously try new things despite outstanding results.  The only thing we can count on is change.  Those willing to examine their practices and always keep learning gain even more than what ever shows through statistical data.
