GCISD is enrolled to participate in the National Mock Election sponsored by GOOGLE! We will be utilizing the online version and we will have a window from October 20- October 30 to cast our electronic votes! Your campus has an election coordinator, be sure to find out what is happening on YOUR campus!

Region 10 is hosting a number of exciting DFW World Affairs Council events for educators in the Metroplex. The following events are especially good if you don't want to miss a day of instruction!

UNICEF Teacher Forum -- Don't MISS IT!  THIS Saturday!!

Join us for this unique event in conjunction with UNICEF's Tap Project, where you'll enjoy a film presentation by the American Film Institute and informative breakout sessions centered on water issues, conservation, sanitation, and more!

Great Decisions: Persia
Location: Region 10 ESC, 400 E. Spring Valley Rd. Richardson, TX - Dallas Room
Date: October 14, 2008  Time: 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm
This summer the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth sent five teachers to conferences in New York and Washington DC. The trainings highlighted Persia and a Foreign Policy Associations publication called Great Decisions. Come learn how to incorporate a wealth of lessons and information into your classroom. This free, three hour workshop includes dinner and a three hour professional development certificate. Limited to 50.

Celebrate Turkey: Turkish Republic Day!
Location: Region 10 ESC, Abrams Bldg., 904 Abrams Rd. Richardson, TX - Bluebonnet Room
Date: November 15, 2008  Time: 11 am - 2 pm
Come join us for a Turkish Republic Day Celebration featuring the Deputy Consul of Turkey. Enjoy a FREE Turkish lunch and entertainment. Our four teachers that traveled to Turkey this summer will present their findings along with lesson plans and PowerPoints they have created for you to use in your classroom. Three professional development hours will be provided. Limited to 25.

World in Transition
Location: Region 10 ESC, 400 E. Spring Valley Rd. Richardson, TX - Ellis Room
Date: June 18-19, 2009  OR August 13-14, 2008   Time: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
Teachers will be trained in using educational materials called The World in Transition, developed by the Southern Center for International Studies. The DFW World Affairs council will provide participants with a series of videotapes and blackline masters examining the major regions of the world from five different perspectives: economic, political, cultural, geographic and environmental will be presented. The materials have been correlated to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Social Studies.


Also, The Texas Young Lawyers Association has produced a video and curriculum on the history of voting rights. You can download the curriculum and video or order a DVD of the video at http://www.tyla.org/VoteAmerica/ .
