        A recorder is an instrument in the woodwind family.  It was popular for use in folk music performed by street musicians as early as the middle ages.  Now it mostly used as a teaching tool in the elementary music classroom.

        Here at Silver Lake, the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students use a method that awards students "belts" as they become proficient in increasingly difficult skills.  Many of the skills they are learning will translate over to band and choir as they move on to middle school and beyond.
