The Program for the Academically Talented (PAT) offers many options for students in GCISD.
Primary Enrichment Program (PEP) for Kindergarten students:
PEP is a cooperative effort involving regular classroom teachers that have received a minimum of 30 hours of staff development regarding the needs of gifted students and the Gifted Specialist. The teacher works with students in the regular classroom. Instruction focuses on the development of critical and creative thinking processes. Strategy lessons, learning centers and enrichment units are presented by the teacher. PEP's primary focus is to develop lessons to assist in identification of kindergarten students.
Program for the Academically Talented (PAT) - Grades 1-5
PAT is a "pull out" program for students in grades one through five. These classes meet once a week. A thematic approach is utilized as the curriculum focus. Multi-disciplinary units incorporate the subject areas of reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies, as well as techniques and strategies to develop critical and creative thinking, research skills, independent study skills, problem solving techniques, and leadership skills.
Options Available for Elementary Gifted Students:
• Regular classroom with pull-out program once a week.
• Differentiated and/or tiered assignments offered to students in core content areas.
• Clustering PAT students in classrooms with teachers trained in providing for the needs of gifted students.
• Curriculum compacting followed by extensions.
• ELE (Extended Learning Experience) with gifted specialist. This option is available to high ability students and is subject specific. The classroom teacher plans with the Gifted Specialist to develop lesson plans and criteria for selection of students for the lesson.
• Independent study options.
• Telescoping in math. Testing for this option is conducted in the spring. There are multiple criteria that must be met for this option. Please meet with the Gifted Specialist at your child's campus if you are interested in this option.
