Definition of Gifted and Talented

Gifted and Talented students in the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District are defined as those who excel in ability to think, reason, judge, invent or create to the degree that they need special facilities and/or educational services in order that they may have the opportunity to achieve their potential as a  measure of self-fulfillment while making increased meaningful contributions to society.

PAT Program Mission Statement
Recognizing that children are our greatest resource, the mission of the Program for the Academically Talented is to promote awareness of the unique social, emotional, and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students and to impact the development of appropriate services to meet these needs.

Program Overview - Primary Enrichment Program (PEP)
• Kindergarteners are served through PEP.

• PEP is a cooperative effort between the teacher and the gifted specialist.


• Instruction focuses on development of critical and creative thinking processes.

• PEP lessons are taught by the regular classroom teacher and are 30 minutes in length.

Program Overview of Program for the Academically Talented (PAT)
• Designed to meet the needs of students in grades 1-5 who are identified as gifted or placed in the program on a trial placement.

• Students are usually clustered together in a regular classroom with a trained teacher for grade-level instruction.

• Students meet with the gifted specialist once a week as part of the pull-out program.

• Instruction in multi-disciplinary units utilize a thematic approach.

• Critical and creative thinking, research skills, problem-solving techniques and leadership skills are emphasized.

Program Goals
GT students will...

• Demonstrate the ability to conceptualize and see relationships at the level of their unique potential in order to become independent, self-directed learners.

• Utilize critical thinking skills to foster in-depth, complex learning that demonstrates an understanding of advanced content.

• Develop a positive self-concept comparable to their area of giftedness that meets their social and emotional needs in order to interact and communicate effectively with other gifted students, peers, and society.

• Collaborate in an environment that fosters relationships with students, families, businesses, community members and local governments to yield advanced products or performances.

• Use advanced, divergent thinking skills to explore creative possibilities and solutions to enhance productivity and problem solving for themselves and society.
