Book A Trip Around the World
Silver Lake's 2006-2007 Recreational Reading Program
THE PROGRAM
This year, the school-wide recreational reading program is Book a Trip Around the World!  The goal is to reach each of the seven (7) continents displayed on the wall outside the library.  Students will read 300 minutes to receive a boat, plane or hot air balloon that will identify them on the wall.  Admission to each station requires 300 minutes of reading (or being read to) at home.  As students read, their marker will travel along the wall to show their progress.  Students reaching station #7 will be honored with an awards party in May.  The program runs through April.  April 27 is the last day to turn in minutes.

RECORD KEEPING
Students will be given a different recording form for each station that should be returned to the library when completed.  A bookmark or sticker will be awarded upon reaching each station.  It's that easy - no time limits, no tests, and no book reports!  Students just read whatever they like to read.  Each station will contain a challenge to read a particular type of book, but it is not a requirement.  Note:  Parents and teachers may participate along with the students.  What better way to show the children that we think reading is a fun thing to do!

GOALS (and how parents can help)
The ultimate goal of this program is to develop life-long readers by:
Making reading a habit  - encourage your child to read 15 minutes a day instead of an hour once a week.
Helping children discover their own reading interests - let children read what they want to read, even if you think its too easy or of poor quality.  As they become mature readers they will become more discriminating.
Exposing children to different types of reading materials - magazines, comics, and nonfiction books might be of interest to a reluctant reader.  Subscribe to a childrens magazine or take your child browsing in a bookstore sometime.
Demonstrating that reading is a worthwhile leisure activity - turn off the TV and read aloud to your child.  Be a role model by reading a book yourself.
